Need advice before GP call

I've become really stressed over the past six months or so (combination of lockdown and other life situations) and I'm struggling to function at the moment, I'm pretty much at breaking point.
I want to take a break from work and I think it needs to be a month. I just can't imagine that if I have a week or two anything will change because I'll just be thinking next week I need to go back to work.
I've made an appointment for a call with a GP. My question is, can I ask them to sign me off for a month? Does that just sound like I'm taking the piss? Can I even ask at all or do I need the GP to suggest it? I feel really nervous and panicky about the appointment, I haven't done this before. I don't want the GP to think I'm faking it for a break.

So sorry you are feeling like this.
I wouldn't initially ask for a month, speak honestly about how you feel and that you need time away from work to recover and see what the GP suggests.
I signed myself off for a week once with stress when I was being bullied at work. I don't think doctors note is needed until the second week, some one should be along soon who knows the rules.
Try not to stress yourself more about having the conversation, GPs will have heard it all before and will want to help you feel well again Flowers

Depends on the GP tbh, pre lockdown it would often be for 2 weeks initially to ensure you returned for another one, just so they could assess how you are doing. It’s not unusual for it to be a couple of weeks initially but there is never any problem extending it, especially at the moment. They won’t think you are taking the piss if you say you need a few weeks to get yourself together because you feel you are at breaking point.
I hope things improve for you soon Flowers

Thanks for the comments. In my state I actually forgot I could be off for a week without a note so I'm doing that from today and will speak to the gp next week. It feels like such a relief!
