I’ve been on sertraline for 5 days now and feel like rubbish got no interest in nothing and spend all day on the sofa which is horrible , all I want to do is get up get dressed and go out or do things I use to enjoy but the head aches feeling sick and the anxiety just takes over and I am thinking do I stick with sertraline and give it a chance do I try something else as I can’t carry on like this ......... is anyone else feeling like this ?

Hey :) I'm on day 5 too! While it sounds as though you are suffering the side effects a bit more than me, I have been feeling 'crappy' and have also spent my days on the sofa chilling out (with the odd nap in bed!) since I started taking them.

The side effects of these things can be nasty. Be kind to yourself. There must be a good reason your doctor has put you on them - and hopefully whatever you miss out on in the short term you'll enjoy even more in the long term when the tablets help your general state of mind and peacefulness :).

Has your GP booked in a follow up appointment for you? Mine has asked to see me again 2 weeks after starting. If you can manage until then (unless obviously you get a really adverse reaction) they can help you decide whether to stick with it, change the dosage or try something else.

The first couple of weeks on an SSRI are always the worst. If you can get through these, the potential benefit is amazing :).

Good luck! I am taking sertraline, I’m in my second month but a bit different as I’m taking it 2 weeks on 2 weeks off. So my side effects are still sticking around as taking longer to build up. Jaw clenching was so bad that I had to reduce my dose, other than that, extreme extreme extreme thirst. All signs point to side effects only getting better and lessening so stick with it!! The plus points have definitely made me want to keep trying with it as I’ve felt great (mine is for anxiety rather than depression).

I'm a couple of weeks in @Kir5tyTwiggy and have managed to do a few things this weekend which I haven't been able to face for sometime so I know it's starting to help. Yesterday was a good day. Today less so. Be kind to yourself. My headaches were horrible but they've passed. So has the nausea. If you are able to take it easy, do and give them as much of a chance as you can and I'm sure they will help.

Kir5tyTwiggy · 10/01/2021 20:57

I was lucky and had few side effects but it takes lots of people time to settle (some people even have raised anxiety for a while)

Stick with them and talk to your GP at two week review.

My GP suggested I start on 25mg for a week, so if you’ve dropped down to that, you should be able to build up soon,

partyatthepalace · 10/01/2021 21:21

@PolarnOPirate

I am just curious as I started on 50mg a couple months back for anxiety, and have never heard of 2 weeks on 2 weeks off.

Did your doctor explain why? Is it a thing?!

Kir5tyTwiggy · 10/01/2021 21:29

Yes my anxiety has definitely got worse since taking it and do most people go up a dose when side effects have stopped because I couldn’t imagine me going up till these effects stop if honest I’m so scared of going up in dose as when was on 50mg that was a horrible feeling
I can’t sleep and have some sleeping tablets so tonight I might take one to see if helps

Mine just put me on these after a 5 minute conversation about my symptoms. I was started on 50mg too but luckily have been okay on it. I'm worried that they'll want me to up it after 2 weeks. I'd rather stay on 50 but not sure if it even works at this level.

No, I've never been on this or anything like it before. I've spent 12 years ignoring the fact that I really need help!!

Kir5tyTwiggy · 10/01/2021 22:04

I think for people on mumsnet have said they on 50mg and works for them and I see others that are on 150mg+ but yes it’s worrying to go up a dose I think my doing it at 25mg each time for me is best so maybe if you do have to go up do it in small doses .
Yea I knew I was going bad again but wiv Christmas and things I just carried on and then New Year’s Eve had a drink and I’ve been in house since then must of all just finally come out a d knew I had to ring doctors hopefully we be back on here soon saying how good we feel and be helping someone else who has just started Smile
We will get there in end

I am now 4 months in and am me again. The first two weeks I felt no effect and weeks 3,4 and 5 I was a zombie and thought I better come off them but before I spoke to my gp to do so I suddenly felt much better and normal. They have really worked for me and I think I will keep going until life feels more normal again. Good luck!

Kir5tyTwiggy · 10/01/2021 23:38

That’s great to hear , I just want to get to that stage ASAP because this beginning bit is so hard and just makes u wanna give up and is horrible for the ppl around you but I’m so glad u have come out the other side
