I'm fatter since taking citalopram.
Maybe all ADs cause you to pile on the pounds?

notolerance · 12/10/2007 20:51

Really hope not - just started fluoxetine & the last thing I need is to put on weight!
thetryingistrying - have you just started taking this? I started last week & have had really bad headaches - has this affected you - or any-one else?

pneumalifenewname · 12/10/2007 20:54

Hey! Self image is important so don't feel bad about asking

I found I had no appetite on it (for 6 weeks) so lost tonnes but I think in time some people do actually start to gain again.

Thing is, when stress and anxiety are so bound up with eating and weight it is hard to know whether it is actually the drug or simply the change in mood.

HTH

I'm on Citalopram and chunky with it! ughhh!!

sweetbean · 12/10/2007 20:57

Yes i was on it but back when it was called prozac and it does make you loss weight !!!

pneumalifenewname · 12/10/2007 20:58

Yep, I didn't eat anything until I changed to Citalopram. It is baaaaaaad for lard removal indeed

thetryingistrying · 12/10/2007 20:59

thanks everyone - i am abit freaked out about the whole thing. sitting here with teh packet wondering whether to take them or not.

pneumalifenewname - you are right abut the stress anxiety thing.

Pneu - do you find you have a bigger appetite with Citalopram? I was unsure whether it was because I'd just got used to eating more since I was PG and it carried on after the birth iyswim or whether it was the ADs

CrookshanksinJimmyChoos · 12/10/2007 21:00

Trying - my mum is on those AD's and she hasn't gained any weight from them so I guess its really an individual thing

pneumalifenewname · 12/10/2007 21:05

Yes, Crook. I've been on Citalopram for about 3 weeks (I think) and I am actually struggling to keep to a sensible amount of food.

Food for me is a big issue and when I'm stressed or depressed I tend to stop eating but on Fluoxetine I actually had no physical appetite whereas on Citalopram I am both physically and psychologically hungry iyswim.

OP, I suspect that if you start on the Fluoxetine you will lose weight quite rapidly.

i was on prozac for 6m when i was 18... is a long time ago now but i am pretty certain i ddint put on weight. was always a skinny wretch back then (not that one ever appreciates it at that age!)

WeeWitchyWilkie · 12/10/2007 21:09

Disagree with posters on here. Haven't found gained weight with either Fluoxetine and Citalopram. POssible suggestions for weight gain is that it makes you happy so you find your appetite again

allgonebellyup · 13/10/2007 09:54

i have lost my appetite on citalopram, and lost too much weight, but now i an eating for 3! so it took a month for me to feel hungry again.

lucyellensmum · 13/10/2007 10:07

agbu - how are you?

no weight change for me on citalopram. WAs a bit disappointed at no weight loss, relieved at no weight gain.

lucyellensmum · 13/10/2007 10:09

crookshanks, how do you manage to not eat? it must be like a red rag to a bull knowing you mustn't eat for that day - very admirable

Isababel · 13/10/2007 10:11

I did lost quite a lot of weight when in it but I think that it was because I tend to comfort eating and as I was not feeling as stressed I was not doing it that often.

lucyellensmum · 13/10/2007 10:11

oh and trying, its not shallow to worry about something like that, enjoy your new svelteness

huffpuff · 13/10/2007 21:45

Have been on Fluoxetine since August and have lost nearly a stone although i still have an odd glass of wine and the odd bar of choccie!!! My appetite has definitely dwindled since i started taking them. HTH X

fizzbuzz · 13/10/2007 22:00

Yes, it made me gain weight.

At first I didn't connect the overeating with th Prozac, but it definitely. I wasn't hungry on it for the first 2 months, but then I was starving all the time. All Ad's are guilty of making you overeat I was told by a psych, some more than others.

Also the other thing is, if you tend to crave sweet carbohydrate foods ad's make this worse. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer

Sorry

CrookshanksinJimmyChoos · 15/10/2007 20:30

LucyEllensmum - you get yourself into a mindset of I'm not eating and it seems to work....its very strange actually as in the evening when I could eat again, my willpower went out of the window! Just goes to show that it really is mind over matter re food...well, seems to be in my case anyway!
