Teen stopped taking fluoxetine

My 16 year old has admitted to me that she secretly stopped taking her fluoxetine over 2 months ago.
Her depressive symptoms have returned including suicidal thoughts, not getting up in the morning etc.
So annoyed with her for doing this as things had started being so much better and now we've gone backwards.
I'm wondering if she can just start taking her medication again - it'll take us a while to see the psychiatrist.

Has she said why she stopped?

teenonprozac · 29/09/2020 08:52

Because she was feeling better and thought she could manage without medication!

I’d call psychiatrist office and ask for phone appt.
If it’s a low enough dose, she could just start taking it. But if it’s higher dose the psychiatrist will have to start her on lower dose and gradually increase it. But this us for psychiatrist to decide and why you need their professional advice.

We're not in UK and they won't do a telephone consultation here. I'll need to make an appointment and get her in ASAP

Well, I stand corrected. Turns out they would do a telephone consultation. I thought it was all about the $$$ here and they would only have an appointment they would get paid for so pleasantly surprised.
Anyway they've given us a schedule to get DD back up to her regular dosage.
Thanks for the advice!

Great! So happy they were able to help you so quickly. All the best to your DD, hope she feels more herself soon.

Ah, we just got the bill for the consultation - my surprise that they would do it for free was indeed misplaced :) But very good to know that it is a thing at least and we can get DD back on track!
