N/c for this.

I made a self referral today to have counselling. Now I'm thinking, when they call where do I even begin?

Can anyone give advice on what to expect? Positive stories very welcome.

Hello. When you say counselling do you mean through IAPT? Or something different?

Yes a local IAPT talking therapy service

I’ve referred myself recently and am waiting for therapy to start (CBT). It will be another 2 months I think.

I got an initial phone call which lasted about 50 mins. He was very kind, and took me through what I presume is a standard list of questions. We also talked about if I’d had any therapy in the past and what helped.

He then said he would talk to his wider team about what would be best for me, but did suggest on the phone that CBT would be the way forward. (I’m not sure actually if IAPT offer anything else)

I got a call back from him 2 weeks later to confirm and to give a timeframe (3 months).

Hope this helps and good luck.

Thank you, that's really helpful and has put my mind at rest a little.

I hope all goes well with you too.
