I wake up every morning feeling anxious. It’s all consuming and lasts till around lunchtime where it slowly eases until by about tea time I feel fine. Anyone any experience of this and should I speak to a doctor

It's very common to feel more anxious in the morning, there's quite a lot of info about it. I'm the same. I think for me it's because the day is starting and I'm consumed by what's ahead. If anxiety is impacting your life then you should definitely speak to your GP.

Hi,

Yep can totally relate. I've stopped reaching for my phone first thing as looking at social media etc made anxiety worse. I did find getting up, having a shower then settling down with a cup of tea and reading a few pages of a book was a really nice start to the day.

KingaRoo · 04/08/2020 16:07

That's so weird I was about to start my own thread on this. For me as soon as lunch is over I feel 80-100% better. I wondered if it was because I have been having a glass of wine with dinner.

Thank goodness i am not alone but so sad others are going through this

I will try doing something relaxed in morning, that makes sense as just now i get up and try to keep busy to get through. Maybe feeding the anxiety.

Oh it’s an awful feeling? Is there something triggering it or is it for no apparent reason? Either way yes I would talk to your GP about it. I second not picking up my phone. And usually have to get straight up and go for a run or keep very busy in order to calm it down. I have been out on Mirtazapine (although that was more for depression) but seems to have helped with my morning anxiety. Flowers

Sorry for typos! Should have been a ! not a ?

Aquamarine1029 · 04/08/2020 20:58

Are you drinking alcohol at night? Are you peri-menopausal?

KingaRoo · 04/08/2020 22:48

I have been drinking wine in the evenings but not excessively. I don't think I'm perimenopausal but I suppose I could be. I'm 42.

Aquamarine1029 · 05/08/2020 00:41

You definitely could be peri-menopausal, and anxiety issues are a major symptom. Alcohol also causes morning anxiety, especially during peri. Cut out the alcohol entirely and see if that makes a difference.

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 05/08/2020 01:03

It might be an adrenal issue. I had a 24 hour cortisol test and my morning level was sky high, off the charts. Explains why I hate mornings so much! I would wake up in a panic, heart racing and a feeling of dread, which wouldn’t settle for a couple of hours. Vitamin B12 also helps as I get palpitations in the morning when my levels are low.

HRTRefusal · 05/08/2020 02:49

Yes, I started getting this a few months ago, one of the many gifts bestowed by the menopause.

BDeyes · 07/08/2020 09:25

yes my anxiety is always worse first thing in the morning no idea why. it's was particularly bad when I was very bad with post natal anxiety. I'd have to do the school run and I'd be having terrible morning anxiety sweats and a racing heart it was an awful time. I still suffer with terrible GAD (although not diagnosed by GP) and still find my anxiety worse first thing in the morning. I tend to be much calmer in the evening.

BDeyes · 07/08/2020 09:36

is anything inparticular bothering you at the moment that is triggering your anxiety? if it's been going on for a while then yes id say go and see your GP.

ValancyRedfern · 07/08/2020 09:46

I generally feel at my worst in the mornings. I find crawling out of bed and going straight into doing some yoga helps. Going straight onto my phone makes it much worse. Hope you're having an OK morning this morning.

pandafunfactory · 07/08/2020 09:52

Yup it's common and it sucks.

teaandcustardcreamsx · 08/08/2020 01:21

I get this too! Any time in the morning no matter how early/late. Current coping mechanism is sleep all day and wake up in the afternoon. No idea how I’m going to cope when September rolls around Sad

Happyspud · 08/08/2020 10:40

Yep, since I had a bit of a breakdown a few months ago I've been dealing with anxiety and it's by far worst in the morning. Sometimes it wakes me at 5am, those are the worst mornings. I get to the afternoon and think What. The. Fuck. Was. That.

I feel very frustrated and upset that I can't seem to control it. I start my CBT counselling next week though and am on medication so will do everything possible to sort this crazy anxiety illness.

Just so you know OP, you're not alone. But do reach out for help because untreated anxiety can get worse. And there is thankfully LOTS of help out there for it.

I love my life, love my kids, have always been a happy person. But here I am unwell with anxiety.

Mvshrln · 10/08/2020 10:00

@Happyspud sorry to hear you had a bit of a breakdown :( I had similar a few months ago too - think it was partially triggered by the pandemic situation. Good luck with you CBT this week! I found it helped me a lot.
