I'm looking for some advice DC has just been diagnosed with ADHD and the Dr suggested that I might also have it as well and I am considering getting myself tested. Has anybody done this and did you go via the NHS or private? And how much did it cost?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I went nhs - saw a psychiatrist who did a couple of interviews. I do have a huge MH history though which may have helped in a way because they couldn’t fob me off with antidepressants etc, I’ve tried all that. It would have been a couple of years wait but due to a mistake on their part they ended up putting it through as urgent. Some areas have even longer waits unfortunately.

I’m on a generic form of Ritalin now and it has genuinely changed my life so it is worth pursuing if you struggle!

I’ve heard a lot of people use Psychiatry UK for private assessment and prescription

Friend of mine diagnosed at 38. Just went through his GP and was referred on.

He said its been a game changer. Hes still a little hyper but he said his mind feels more calm than it ever did before.

@LaneBoy sounds like my life ... but the GP won't put me forward for assessments for anything .. MH issues of 30 years & reading about inattentive adhd ( and also asperger's ) has suddenly made sense to me and I'm now 49 ... I need a diagnosis...x

I’m 39 and have just asked to be assessed via my GP. My daughter is also being assessed. She’s 9.

DH's son aged 35 is being tested, but he ticks all the boxes for innaatentive ADHD. I hope they can find something that works for him. Currently, he has no friends, no job, no qualifications, despite being bright. It needs to change as he is clearly suffering. Good luck with your diagnosis. I think it could help you to know.

I used Psychiatry UK. It was around 350 for the assessement plus 175 for the follow up and monthly cost of meds during titration (25 per prescription and 15-70 for meds) Check with your doctor if they do Shared Care i.e. will take on prescribing medication once you have got the right dose. I don't take meds every day. What helps me a lot is sleep, diet, esp. protein (contains dopamine), exercise. All hard to sustain if you have ADHD. Also look at Russell Barkley on You Tube ADHD Essentials, he explains it very well. Dx was also life changing for me.
