Hi, I’ve recently been advised by my gp to change my citalopram to sertraline as the citalopram was no longer working! I’m really struggling 9 days in! Increased anxiety is killing me in the Morninn when trying to look after my 2 yearold! Any advice or experiences thanks

I haven't taken citalopran, but I am on sertraline for depression & anxiety. It has made a huge difference for me, but it did take a good 6-8 weeks for me to notice any improvements. I don't know the implications of swapping from one to the other, so it may just be a waiting game I'm afraid.

Thank you. I was under the impression that it doesn’t take as long to get into your system when already been on an ssri! Maybe I was wrong! I’m on day 10 I though that I may have felt an improvement by now x

Hi I am on day 15 of 100mg of Sertraline. I swapped from 40mg of Citalopram as it stopped working.
I have noticed I’m quite irritable but no anxiety. How many mg was you on and how many are you on now?

EmeraldShamrock · 19/06/2020 14:37

Give it time it is early days. I find them amazing the first month was tough, bloating, night sweats, headaches.
Once I settled they were life changing. I've been on lots of different ones.

I’ve tried a few different tablets but going on and coming off citalopram was the absolute worst ☹️. I’m on sertraline now and i get on with it far better.

Keep going, it won’t take too much longer before things settle.

Lottie124 · 19/06/2020 15:58

I was on 20mg of citalopram, and now I’m on 50 mg of sertraline, it’s just the increased anxiety im really struggling with! And no appetite at all x

Hi Lottie
I’ve been on sertraline 50mg for 4 weeks now. The anxiety during the first week was awful, second week still quite bad but began to taper off during week 3. Have had a couple of good days this week. I’m also having CBT which is helping. I lost my appetite too but it seems to be coming back this week. Keep going - better days are ahead! Good luck!x

EmeraldShamrock · 19/06/2020 21:44

Overall I'd say 6 weeks. If they work for you you'll feel great. Use the extra anxious energy take a long walk to flush it out.

Aria20 · 19/06/2020 21:46

I was on citalopram 20mg had terrible headaches with it so came off it, was advised to do 50mg sertraline for 10 days then 100mg. I got bad heartburn so take them in the morning instead. It has helped me massively, I definitely noticed the difference by week 3 once Id been on 100mg for a week or so...

50mg is the lowest dose, so if you were on 40mg citalopram you will likely need more than 50mg sertraline. Persevere for now and it after 3-4 weeks you feel it's not making a difference ask to increase to 100mg

Aria20 · 19/06/2020 21:48

Sorry 20mg of citalopram not 40mg! Has your GP recommended increasing after a set period?

Lottie124 · 19/06/2020 21:52

Not as of yet she hasn’t I have a review a weeks time, I think it will need upping! I will suggest this to her xx

I know this thread is old but it sounds like my situation! I’ve switched from Paroxatine to Sertraline and the increased anxiety, nausea and no appetite is so horrible!

Lottie124 · 01/11/2022 11:30

Hi . I actually found that sertraline didn’t suit me at all, it was horrendous for me! I have ended up back on citalopram on a slightly higher dose now! I’m here if you need a chat anytime x

How long did you persist with the Sertraline for? I was on Paroxetine for over 20 years and it stopped working 😞 Have you been on Citralopram for long?

Hi, sorry I can’t remember. I actually came off them last year as is being on various anti depressants for years and don’t feel they helped and was diagnosed with ADHD so decided to stop them.

Terrilouiewillow · 15/09/2025 10:34

Awww that’s good! I hope the adhd meds work for you x
