I have been hearing noises in my attic for over a week .. I got pest control out who say it looks like rats .. they put poison down 4 days ago I still hear them . My phobia is that .. I'm terrified can't sleep can't eat .. can't leave my house to stay anywhere in current situation. My 13 year old boy not scared thankfully .. but I'm a wreck had to call doc who give me some tablets but I'm just not coping sleeping downstairs now .. I cannot think abt anything else it's the most awful thing ( I know Covid is 10 times worse !) but I just cannot rationally deal with it .. I feel stupid like a baby I'm 46 !! Why won't they just die 4 days and still hear them .. I want to sleep in my car ! Going back to work next week as well no sleep dreading it .. my partner who doesn't live with me can't come cause of situation.. just so hard .. has anyone else been through this & have u got it sorted .. sorry long rant !!

Can they put traps down as poison is horrific and a long drawn out death. Can take several days for them to die. I know traps are instant and not humane however, least it's over and done with quickly. I'd call out pest control again.

SpillTheTeaa · 09/05/2020 09:35

I had a bloody mouse in my kitchen! There was a hole in the wall which had never been finished Hmmbehind the kitchen cupboards.I shit my pants and wouldn't go out there for over a month. I'm petrified of them.
Pest control did put bait down and said he could also see signs they've been in the loft.
I get your fear. You feel like you're watching every small thing for movements!
When is pest control due back?

helpingmyself · 09/05/2020 09:46

Thank u so far for replies .. yes they are coming again but have said I need to wait at least 7 days to see if it has worked ! Yes I get that everynoise I hear I think it's them can't even go upstairs till my son gets up .. I feel such a big baby .. I think I am going to get hypnosis's to help after all this ! .. I will call them again called so many times feel they are getting fed up with me 😔

I feel your pain, have a rat and mouse phobia, can cope with everything else but they have me a quivering wreck, totally irrational, hope it’s all over for you soon

helpingmyself · 15/05/2020 14:52

So saga continues, 2nd visit all bait had been taken & was told rats gone no bodies went out to die . I actually thought I get my house back well no last night heard them again so upset . Actually angry now ! Called pest control who tried to charge me as new job again already paid £170 now they want another £170 should be £70 for 3rd visit .. could cry all I want is them gone .. guy better today at least seems to think he knows how they are getting in .. but need them out first and then get things fixed .. it's torture 😞

I would be exactly the same, we had a mouse infestation, I awoke in the night to hear one scratching next to my bed. I lost my shit! They’d got in from next door who had been storing food badly.

I did read that rats are less cheeky than mice and won’t get so close, but just hearing the horrid scratching and knowing there up there is bad enough.
It’s a proper phobia though, I still get very jittery if I hear noises in the night and prefer to fall asleep with the TV on low- and we moved house 2 years ago.
Unfortunately it sounds like the pest people are taking advantage of your anxiety. Perhaps try another company.

helpingmyself · 15/05/2020 19:56

Thank u for reply .. that's awful with the mouse being so near u ! Think if I saw the rat I'd honestly pass out .. it's definitely a phobia that a lot of people seem to have .. my parents didn't believe me when I said I heard stuff from the attics when I was young , one night I turned on light & saw a mouse running across my bedroom that's where my phobic started ! .. I said to guy today abt being charged again he wrote on receipt £70 instead of £170 so iv got that if they take anymore I'll lose it ! Got top reviews this co as well .. my son says he's heard them a lot today I'm just hoping that's them feeding on bait .. every sound I think it's them scared of my own shadow now !!

You have my sympathies; we had a rat problem 2 or 3 years ago and it freaked me out. Putting poison or traps down is all very well, but you need to find out where they are getting in. Good luck!

Bubblebee7 · 15/05/2020 20:07

I’ve had this for the last 4 years. The noise is horrendous I had rats in my loft. Pest control came out lots of times. We couldn’t find a hole or a point of entry. I had a company to check the drains and nothing was found. Several neighbours had the same issue and another company came out and I had a hole in the drains outside (near my kitchen underground). Ive been hearing a lot less noise but I will be ringing pest control again to check that nothing has died in my loft. It’s a long process and it can take a good while to get rid of rats they can even get in if your house is connected to next door. It’s awful I hope you manage to sort it out. Make sure pest control leave plenty of poison down.

helpingmyself · 16/05/2020 00:22

Omg 4 years how did u cope , 3 weeks of it and I'm on tablets from docs !! It's a bloody nightmare pest control been out 3 times this is 2nd lot of posion .. I was thinking of getting loft conversion just to get rid of them and make my attic rodant free but can't afford !!! .. my poor son I'm keeping him awake with it all ! I have read so online all saying get the professionals out which I have and the creatures still living in my home rent free 😤.. I hope life goes back to semi normal ( only when safe to mind u ) so my partner can come over I'd feel safer as he's not scared .. why do they exist what's the point in them .. lying in sons bed while he's playing PlayStation so I don't sit alone sleep what's that lol sorry rant over !

Have you tried sticky boards? You need to find out how the rats are getting in. I know!! It’s been on and off even though I can hear them I just pray I don’t see the rats.

bicky · 16/05/2020 00:53

Get some sticky boards & mega strong poison from Amazon, plug any holes up with wire wool, they can’t chew through it

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 16/05/2020 00:58

They should have put down traps and not ticked about with poison. The rate can crawl off to die in enclosed spaces and sticky boards are horrendous and such a cruel death. Some will end up chewing their own limbs off, in an attempt to escape. Plastic versions of the old fashioned style traps are still the best method of catching rats.

Sadie789 · 16/05/2020 00:58

We had rats in our attic... it took rentokil 3 fortnightly visits to get rid of them but then that was it they were gone and that was before Christmas, so not back since .

It’s horrible, I sympathise.

Bubblebee7 · 16/05/2020 08:58

Pest control legally are not allowed to use traps. I know it’s cruel the sticky boards I have a phobia!! And the noise is terrible I even went to live with a friend in the beginning. It’s frightening knowing they are in the house.

Itoldyouiwasill · 16/05/2020 09:26

We loved in a house once where we slept in the attic room. However there was a loft space right above our heads. For years we would be kept awake by the most terrible racket and, I'm embarrassed to say, just thought it was birds. When we came to move and started taking old baby items out of the loft space we found that there had been rats all along. Everything was eaten and the rat droppings everywhere. I guess they left once there was no more to eat. I'm telling you this because I've got quite a phobia about rodents and had to leave a house for a week a few years back when we had mice. Those bloody rats never came into the house. They ate what was there only.
I really feel for you though

Thank u so much for all the replies .. still here my son heard during the night me this morning .. staying away from my bedroom .. I'm going to wait 10-14 days for pest control to come out for 4th visit , give bait longer to work .. my boyfriend has said he will go up when we will finally allowed to see each other and get all holes fixed thank god ! .. trying to think more positive today none of my neighbours having any problems.. I had a 80 foot tree cut down few weeks ago the noise started then thought maybe a squirrel but guy said cause the first bait all gone must be rats 😞.. having a drink today to block it all out .. if life isn't hard enough now !

helpingmyself · 16/05/2020 17:31
