Insomnia, depression and medication

My GP has suggested prescribing me an SSRI, as she rightly links my sleep problems to low mood. However, research shows that SSRI’s can actually disrupt and fragment sleep cycles. So I’m not sure, as the sleep problems are one of my worst symptoms. I do practice good sleep hygiene. And I find that doing a meditation body scan before bed can help. But I’m still regularly waking for the day at 4.30am, getting about 5 hours sleep, and I’m so tired. Any experiences of what drugs have helped you for depression AND insomnia?

I was given mirtzapine antidepressant when I had sleeping problems. It really knocks me out one hour after taking it. I sleep solid until kids wake me up. It has helped with depression too. (I take two antidepressants sertraline and mirtzapine).

Thanks undead. That sounds good. Do you find mirtzapine has caused much weight gain?

I have gained weight but I am taking another medication that causes weight gain too. But the sleep is so good on mirtzapine...
