What does CBT entail?

Just that really. I’ve been accepted into a waiting list for CBT via my GP, I had a telephone assessment today to check I’m suitable.
How do the sessions work? I’ve had standard counselling before a do hated it, it just made me cry and ramped up my self harming a notch so I’m worried about starting CBT.

Cbt just deals with changing your behaviours and the thought processes that lead to them. It doesn't deal with issues from the past or anything like that.

If you're doing it through IAPT then it's really basic cbt, stuff you can read in a self help book for free from your local library.

I recently had a course for insomnia through nhs, had been on waiting list over 6 months and finally got an appointment early with a trainee! If I’m honest it was a complete waste of time, she kept telling me every session what CBT was but not actually giving me any coping strategies. I was really disappointed as had high hopes!
