Drinking alcohol and sertraline

Hi all,

I’ve been on sertraline for around 2 years now and can honestly say it’s changed my life.
HOWEVER for the past couple of years I’ve been going a bit ‘loopy’ after having a drink. I have no off button, can stay up all night and get extremely lairy...behaving in ways that is quite unlike me. Most recently having to apologise to a colleague the next day due to my behaviour (the shame).

Ive always put it down to becoming newly single and just having a ‘good time’ but now I’m wondering if it could be a side effect of sertraline.

Just wondering if anybody else has experienced a change in their drunken self after starting on sertraline?

No, but I thought the advice for medication like Sertraline, is to if not avoid alcohol completely, to certainly reduce it?

Yep, definitely more loopy when drunk. I'm loving it!

Honestly, sounds more like a drink problem. I've had both so no judgement intended (drink issues and sertraline). Do you want to cut down?

@Redruby25 well the doctor didn’t tell me this and when I research it, all it says is studies haven’t shown any relation but still advise not to. But of course it’s goung to have an effect, it’s mixing drugs!!? I don’t know why I haven’t clicked on sooner!

@brightonroc ha well I was until I’ve had to start apologising to people!

@CottonSock I’ve never really viewed it as a drink problem, I never drink alone/in the house/during the week. But when I go out there’s no stopping me, I suppose that is a bit of a problem if I’m not mindful at all of how much I’m drinking

I have a drink on sertraline but not much as the sertraline has given me diarrhoea!! I’ve only been on it eight weeks but the diarrhoea only started two weeks ago! Anyone else experienced this?

I’ve heard that you get drunk quicker on lots of antidepressants, that’s why they recommend you cut down.

@Vml12345 I do.... but that could equally be the meds I take for diabetes, or just me. I’ve always been prone to the sudden need to go.
