Started sertraline, is this normal?

Hi everyone,

Started sertraline yesterday and I'm aware it takes a few weeks to take effect, but today I feel very "drunk", almost like I am not in my own body and very drowsy. Best way I can describe it!

Is this normal? It's quite bizarre, I am on 50mg once a day for reference.

This is all new to me and have no idea what to expect on this tablet so some advice would be much appreciated although I understand it will affect everyone differently, I just feel a little weird!

Yes it's fairly common to feel spaced out the first few days, try not to worry! Just take extra care if you're doing any sort of activity that could be risky, and rest as much as you can. The feeling of being 'out of your body' is probably a sort of detachment, which can be present in a milder form as the medication levels out over time. It's part of the antidepressant effect, except it doesn't have the kind of intensity you're experiencing today. My experience is that gradually the sertraline chills me out and I'm very much present in my body but not as emotionally reactive as I am without the medication.

Hope that makes sense and helps! Seriously, just relax into it.

Yes that's normal and it will pass.

Thanks all for your replies, since I post I have felt absolutely dreadful!!! I've been at the toilet with an upset stomach in both aspects and it keeps coming in waves!!
I definitely didn't expect this, is it meant to make you vomit?

Felt completely fine this morning prior to taking the tablet so it's definitely this and not food poisoning or a bug.

Thanks!

I started Sertraline today too (50mg)
Have also been living in the toilet all afternoon & have read that this is normal Hmm
I wrote a post on another thread (the one titled took my first sertraline today) On that thread quite a few people said this side effect only lasted for the first day. Fingers crossed!
Good luck with everything Flowers

Be wary of it. It's not a widely publicised side effect but it gave me amnesia after 6 months. My memory has never been the same and I stopped taking it over 4 years ago.
