Anxiety has flare up lately, maybe because of tiredness I don’t know. I go through phases of panicking over certain things. I seem to get everything out or proportion. Just need a bit of reassurance about an issue if poss.
From nowhere a few days ago I remembered that on our house survey when we bought it 10 years ago it said there ‘could be’ asbestos in the artex. Completely forgot all about it until now and I’m having panic attacks. None of it’s broken or anything. It’s all freshly painted and in fairly good condition. Please no scary things, I’ll just feel better if I know other people have artexed houses. Thank you all in advance.

Hiya! Maybe you could tell me about something positive that happened today instead?

Plantmoretrees · 29/10/2019 20:16

For me, I finally found my car keys which were actually in the car under the car seat. I looked all last night and today and ended up taking the spare keys, which didn't have a house key on. Anyway, very happy to have found them!
What did you do today?

Plantmoretrees · 29/10/2019 20:17

Also we have artex. It appears fine!

WhiskersPete · 29/10/2019 20:32

I used to work in asbestos analysis.

Asbestos is completely harmless unless it is disturbed. It will be held within the artex. Unless you are smashing at it with a hammer you will be fine.

WhiskersPete · 29/10/2019 20:33

Plus not all artex even has asbestos.

Newmumma83 · 29/10/2019 20:35

My grandparents do... and I do as long as it’s not cracked or broken you are fine.

And it’s a maybe ...not guaranteed that you do have it.

My dad had asbestos in his garage roof ... he only recently got it taken away safely by the correct people .. it was never a danger until someone broke it up... so no taking a hammer to it and you will be fine

Singlenotsingle · 29/10/2019 20:38

We've got artexed ceilings right throughout the house. And probably asbestos in the garage roof. We'll leave well alone. It'll all be fine.

Vi37 · 29/10/2019 21:06

Thank you, a couple of years ago the artex on the landing seemed to shrink slightly, leaving about a 5 mm gap between the ceiling and the wall, I was in a massive panic it could have blown asbestos dust around the house from the gap or into my sons room. My dad put coving up a few months ago and there is no gap now. Sorry if this is blabbering, I’m an absolute wreck, I had to call my local crisis team yesterday I’m so upset, I feel like I’ve poisoned my family especially my son. I can’t deal with this at all.

I get health anxiety myself. Although it's usually me that's ill and it's very crippling. I'm really sorry you are having to deal with this. Try and focus on what has been said by the poster who worked in this area. I know its hard because I can have all the reassurance in the world and I'll be manic with anxiety.

Vi37 · 30/10/2019 19:26

Thank you all. Had a massive breakdown today still thinking I’ve poisoned all my family. I’ve been given fluoxetine and diazepam.

Have you tried Sertraline OP? Has been life changing for me in controlling anxiety

Vi37 · 31/10/2019 10:07

Thanks yes, I tried it because it’s meant to be the best but it made me feel absolutely terrible. I’m now in even more of a state, there’s a small hole in the artex at the side of a light fitting like the size of a screw hole, I couldn’t see it until I really looked. I’m scared thats been letting asbestos in it must have been there years. I’m at my mums I can’t function

I’m absolutely crippled by this.

Sertraline will make you feel worse before you feel better. How long did you try it for?

WelshCake2019 · 08/11/2019 20:57

You will be fine! Your medication will kick in after about 4wks stick with it, do research on coping with anxiety and panic disorder and follow ALL THE ADVICE. Even if you don't like it put classical music on, eg classic FM....fill your senses with positive things. You'll be fine xxx
