First MH appointment soon

I have my first MH counselling appointment on Friday - I self referred after anti depressants hadn’t worked and I was feeling suicidal again. I have a lot of support from friends and family but just can’t get out from under this cloud. I’m sick of living like this but actually going to talk to someone about it makes me feel physically sick.
What will happen? Will we just talk about how I feel? Any experience would be welcomed right now.

Do you know what type of counsellor you are seeing? Is it CBT based?

For your first session the counsellor will get an overview of your problems and explain to you how the sessions will work (including what type of approach they use). They'll also tell you if the sessions are only a limited number, and they'll possibly fill in a risk assessment too. That's nothing to worry about, they just need to make sure that you're not a risk to yourself or others, especially as therapy can sometimes make things worse before they get better.

I think the ‘worse’ before it gets better aspect is what has put me off going in the past. It is called an ‘Initial psychology appointment’ but I really don’t know what that means. I’m also worried as we live in a small town and I’m bound to see someone I know.
