Can I drive with BPD?

I have a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder. I’ve been ill for some years so haven’t even thought about learning to drive but recently have become more stable. I’ve been told that to apply for a provisional I need to declare it to the DVLA. Will it prevent me from driving?

The issue isn't with the disorder itself but any impact on your ability to drive. Impulsiveness, poor judgement etc or effects of medication on reaction times. The dvla will request a report from your doctor and make the decision based on that. Worst case scenario is probably having to wait a few months.

I think you can drive - but you will need to renew your license every year.

I have the same question! Did you get any further clarification OP?

Honestly they will ask the world and his wife for an opinion then fanny around for months before giving you a decision well that's my experience

Do I need to declare BPD!?! I've had it for years and am managed on lots of meds to keep me stable, no problem with driving and I do it every day. I'm panicking now. My psychiatrist, psychologist and GP have never mentioned reporting it!

I was driving before I even had a diagnosis. I didn't know it's supposed to be reported either. (Currently haven't driven for almost 6 years now).

Hi, the guidelines say that you only need to declare it if it affects your driving. I've never driven so can't really say, can't see how it would. I asked my psychiatrist whether I need to, he said it's best to for insurance purposes. Hopefully doesn't take too long.
