Hair loss antidepressant tablets

Hi,

Has anyone had hair loss with antidepressant tablets?

I am currently on sertraline and have been for the past year. Have noticed my hair has got very thin and is breaking. I have read online that sertraline/ antidepressants make the hair follicle relax therefore makes hair fall out.

Any advice on how to stop this happening, anything I can take to close the hair follicle?

Thank you

I did on citalopram. GP told me I didn't because it wasn't listed as a side effect. Hmm but it came out in handfuls every day and got really thin. Off it now and my hair has grown back much thicker. FWIW I found Elvive fibrology shampoo really helped a lot.

I’ve been on sertraline and then citalopram since having my son 2 years ago. My hair which was lovely, long and thick has come out in clumps and is now very thin on the ends I hate it. I blamed being low iron and never associated it with citalopram but I’ve just stopped taking them so I’ll be interested to see x

Thank you so much for your responses.
I had beautiful long thick hair and now it is short and so thin at the ends. I'm in the process of coming off of them now anyway but I cant do anything with my hair.

I'm having an olaplex treatment in a week so hoping itll help.
I also have a doctors appointment so hoping they will give me something to help whilst I'm coming off of them.

Hair thinning and losing hair is a side effect but its really rare.

X

I've been on sertraline for 9 weeks now and noticed this, my doctor said it wasn't the meds but the anxiety and stress I was experiencing before and that it can take 3 months for hair to fall out like that as a result. Not sure I totally buy that, looking forward to seeing some grow back as I get calmer!

@parkmama
I have been on them for a year now and started to notice the hair loss around January/February time. My hair is thin, brittle, dry, lifeless and is only getting worse. Hair loss may possibly be rare with the medication but people are suffering with it and the doctors should listen. Go back and keep pushing your doctor for help. Sertraline relaxes the hair follicle in your head therefore the hair is falling out, it is not growing as strong. I wish you the best of luck.
