I saw several MH people over the years and I am astonished by things they said to me or to others. So here are a few of the things I been told or been said to others.
Have you been told things by professional that didn't make sense?

  • Aggression is not part of mental illness.
  • Go for walks in the middle of the night.
  • They wanted to get family involved even though I never spoke to my family for years because of abuse.
  • Self-harm isn't a crisis and you should ring the Samaritans as they offer counselling which we don't. (By the crisis team and a psychiatrist)
  • Sitting in front of CPN stating I feel suicidal, they told me to ring crisis team!
  • Friend rang crisis team stating she is suicidal and written letters to family. She was told to speak to her friends (the friend has MH problems and was going through a bad patch).
  • Another friend took an overdose and spent 2 days in a general hospital and released under crisis team care. Crisis team could not make contact with her and released her from their care. (They never checked to see if she was ok or if anything happened to her).

Oh some great ones:

What stops you from killing yourself?

People who do not respond well to antidepressants are awkward.

The side effects you experience are psychological. [From different antidepressants over the years: weight gain, restless legs, dry mouth, acid indigestion, dizziness, extreme constipation, extreme anxiety, extreme fatigue, no appetite, etc etc.]

It’s your illness beliefs.

You’d feel better if you were working.

You need to get out more.
