Citalopram

My boyfriend decided to go "cold turkey" by coming off citalopram five days ago. I think he should have consulted his doctor and givin his 20mg a day dose up slowly or had the dose reduced. I'm really worried about what sort of withdrawal symptoms he will have and how long they will go on for. He's bipolar (manic depression) and I'm wondering if it is possible to manage this illness without antidepressants.

His reasons for wanting to give up citalopram were lack of sexual feelings and sleeping 20 hours a day. He has a point.

Any comments, anyone?

He shouldn't go cold turkey, it can mess your head up. You should always come of ADs very slowly as directed by your GP.

I am on citalopram and the doctor told me it is absolutely neccesary to wean of them slowly by reducing dosages. I think you need to get your boyfriend to go and see his doctor asap. Coming off them cold turkey could make him feel really dreadful HTH

Don't want to go into it much, but my Dp took himself off 40mg citalopram, just stopped taking them, after a disatarous appt with his psychy.

It was awful, the worst 2 months of my life.
He bordered on psychotic, and had never shown any psychotic sx before

If your dp has a history of bi=polar I could only imgine it to be worse- as the illness is very unpredictable anyway.

please tell him to think again.
