Sertraline tiredness

Hi all,

Currently on week 2 of sertraline and still have gnawing anxiety in my chest but I know it takes about 4-6 weeks to kick in so I'm still riding it out. I am extremely tired through the day however, yawning constantly.

The Dr recommended I take it at night time and I generally have no problem getting to sleep but I wake up without fail every night at about 3/4am and have to take 2mg of Diazepam to stave off the anxious feeling and get back to sleep.

Does anyone else have this? Is it the sertraline or perhaps the diazepam making me so tired and lethargic during the day. 2mg is such a small amount though. Does anyone take it in the morning? The only other side affect is a dry mouth and a bit of a loss in appetite.

Hey OP.
I would think its the diazepam in the morning and disrupted sleep pattern that is making you sleepy; however, I know when I started on sertraline that it made me a little drowsy. I generally take it at lunch now and the tiredness is no worse than the usual 3pm slump where I need a brew to perk up again.
Have you tried taking it at other times to see what the effect on your sleep is?
The dry mouth is awful - I'm 4 weeks in and I still get it from time to time! Smile

I had exactly the same issue when I started Sertraline, including the exhaustion, early waking and having to use Diazapam.
It will get much better very soon, so stick with it. Sertraline has allowed me to get back to a normal life.

Thanks both. I might try moving the sertraline forward a bit and try and not resort to diazepam when I wake during the night. I really hope it kicks in soon.

I found Sertraline had the unfortunate combination of making me both tired and completely unable to sleep! Taking it in the morning largely sorted it, the price being that I felt a bit out of it for an hour in the morning. Once I got used to it I moved back to taking it before bed. Something to consider?

@supercee did you manage to get your sleep sorted? Currently week 3 and have insomnia, not able to fall asleep at all.
