Will my first ever diazepam give me side effects first like antidepressants do , taking them for the first time ever next week for bad anxiety to go on a plane , my fear on the plane is that once the doors closed I can't get off , I'm like this with trains too but not as bad x

You are not likely to get the same side effects as on anti-depressants - they shouldn't make your anxiety worse. Most likely you will feel more relaxed and a little sleepy but still able to talk to people and carry out relevant tasks. Do you have enough tablets that you can take one before the flight as a test, ideally when you don't have to do anything! I hope it goes ok.

AtrociousCircumstance · 09/02/2019 23:57

They’re not like that at all. All they do is ease anxiety and make you relaxed.

TakeNoSHt · 10/02/2019 00:03

What strength are the tablets? If 2mg for example they shouldn’t knock you out, just take the edge off it. Remember its illegal to drive on these tablets just incase you were needing to

Mouseville65 · 10/02/2019 00:06

I think taking a test pill is a very good idea because they mess me up.

I have a chronic illness and when it gets really bad or I injure myself I have to take them to relieve the pain - it's that or hospital BUT I'm currently sat here in agony because I will not take them until I Carnt bare it because they make me feel like a crazy person, like I'm not fully present and things that are still look like there moving ... I hate it.

Everyone is different and you may just feel calm but in all honesty if I had my side affects on an airplane it would be awful.

JuniperBeer · 10/02/2019 00:08

No it’s not illegal to drive on them.
It’s illegal to drive on them if you are affected by them.
You’ll be fine. They just take the edge off. Stop your mind racing.

JuniperBeer · 10/02/2019 00:08

Lots of people use them for nerves when flying.

cdjh · 13/02/2019 13:57

I'd test it out first. I had a 5mg one that worked really well when I was having acute, cyclical panic attacks, but then I took the second one as prescribed and I thought I was seriously going crazy.

TaimaandRanyasBestFriend · 13/02/2019 14:05

Same here. I had extreme insomnia due to these attacks but the diazepam didn't help with that. Instead my eyes were coming together but I couldn't sleep and I was becoming suicidal.

theredjellybean · 13/02/2019 14:30

You really shouldn't drink with them.
They are very effective for flying fears.
I usually suggest my patients take one about an hour before boarding, then another just before take off if they start to panic.
I tell them they can take them every four hours through the flight if it is long haul and if they are really anxious on the journey to the airport. However be aware they will make you relaxed and possibly drowsy and airlines can deny you boarding if they think you are affected by alcohol or drugs. So you need to be with it enough not to need to be carried on board!
Hope you enjoy your trip

I took one last night and unfortunately it didn't relax me one bit I had worse anxiety than ever and I feel ill this morning , why did this happen is it normal for people to not get the relaxing feeling , I'm absolutely devastated as was really relying on this to work for me , got my flight tomorrow x

Firstly it could be just too low a dose. 2mg is very small dose, if you add in fact you were probably getting a bit anxious about it working.
It can also be affected by your tolerance to medicines that have a similar affect, so if you also or already take codeine based medication you will need bigger doses of Diaz to get any affect.
I think the feeling anxious and ill today is a symptom of your anxiety.
You are worried it won't work, worried you will have the side effects some people describe here, worried about flying etc.
I have prescribed it hundreds of times for nervous flyers, I have never had a patient have "crazy" side effects or feelings.
It can make you feel a bit weirded out and groggy.. That's the sedating part.
Can you call your gp for more reassurance today..

banskuwansku · 15/02/2019 14:14

I don't get any effect from diazepam or other calmers. Pity because gps and other mental health professionals are basically throwing it to me.

I can manage flight by having one pint of beer before the flight. It relaxes me and I usually snooze the flight. I am afraid of turbulence.

Grace212 · 15/02/2019 14:20

"Pity because gps and other mental health professionals are basically throwing it to me."

argh, and I have issues getting it prescribed, as do many other posters here.

OP, sorry it didn't help you. Is it possible you were too anxious for it to be any good - that has happened to me, and 2mg isn't much for that.

cdjh · 15/02/2019 19:55

I think maybe your right in saying I was to anxious , I'm terrible I just over think everything and make myself worse , I did get really bad anxiety tho and iv had a headache all day but maybe that's down to me with all the worrying I'm doing over this flight tomorrow x

I have had them for the same thing (can't get off fear, not crashing or etc because I can rationalise how rare that is). I know everyone is different but I try to take one when we set off for airport and another at boarding. I find I'm still aware that I'm not overjoyed about it but it stops the panic and makes me see things more clearly. I definitely wouldn't drink with them and also I found the hard way once that they aren't good on an empty atomach- stronger effect but wore off very quickly that time, for me. So don't expect to be skipping down the plane on 2mg but they might still make a subtle difference. I did a 9 hour flight this way, didn't love it but didn't have any problems either. Good luck OP!

justasking111 · 15/02/2019 20:05

My GP gave me 4 for a long haul flight with connections. I had to take one when I reached the first airport, then one when I reached the second. I just felt really relaxed. I felt so good I did not bother with them coming home.
