and are a single mother to a child, are Social Services automatically informed?

I'm sitting in hospital with my friend who has been given a 72-hour section. Her daughter, who is well looked after and a credit to her, is with her dad tonight.

They may be if they are deemed any kind of risk. If for example they attempted suicide with the children present. However it will be judged on a case to case basis. Parental mental health problems are a big risk factor for abuse, but if there is no evidence of abuse or risk to the children then they won't be informed.
