Lithium and Dry Mouth

Just wondering if anyone else has experience of this?
I was diagnosed with BPD type 2 just over a year ago. I started taking lithium and after I'd been on it for about 9 months I started to suffer with a horribly dry mouth. It's been about 5 months now and it is making me utterly miserable. The psychiatrist says it can't be the lithium because I was on it for 9 months before the dry mouth started. The GP says it could be and can't find any other explanation for it. Neither of them want me to come off the lithium because it seems to be controlling my BPD quite well. But I am desperate. It probably sounds trivial but I am finding it unbearable. It wakes me up multiple times in the night and in the day I find it hard to focus on anything else because it is so sore and uncomfortable.
I guess I'm just wondering if anyone else has experienced this and can share any advice. Thank you.

How is your lithium levels?

Vilt · 11/10/2018 19:22

It's at the top of the therapeutic level but has been steady for a long time.

Until your doctors decide what's causing it, have you considered using specific products for combating a dry mouth?

My husband is currently going through radiotherapy on his neck which has given him a dry mouth. The hospital recommended using a special gel that you rub around your mouth. Also a special toothpaste that's non-foaming which he says is very effective. And strangely a product that's basically an artificial saliva! Also very good.

Maybe worth a look in the meantime.

The products are made by Bioxtra. We were given some at the hospital, but I also ordered some from Amazon. I think you can get it at Boots too.

Do you take an anti-dep too? I get terrible dry mouth with my tricyclic.

GirlAndboy (sorry don't know how to tag) I do have a mouth spray that is artificial saliva but I find it doesn't help at all. I didn't know about the other products. I'll investigate. Thank you so much.

Chapsie, I was on quetiapine but came off it six months ago or so. Not on anything except the lithium atm. Sorry to hear you're suffering with a dry mouth too. Have you found anything that helps?
