Starting Sertraline for anxiety/emetophobia (maybe)

So. At the GP last week for something different the doctor handed me a prescription for 50mg Sertraline. I said that I had misgivings about taking medication for my anxiety but she gave it to me anyway and said it was up to me whether I used it.
Now she clearly thinks that the issues I went to see her about are probably caused by anxiety. I don't really think they are.
Is it ok that she just handed me the prescription? No advice, no follow up?
I feel fobbed off.
I absolutely do have a problem with anxiety that has a huge impact on every aspect of every day. Had some talking therapy which made no difference.
Should I try it? I already have so many emotional crutches and habits that I can't break.
Has anyone taken Sertraline for a similar problem?

Thank you :)

Hi, I’ve just started Sertraline for anxiety. It’s been two weeks so far. I was also concerned about starting meds but finally gave in after about a year of considering them. I haven’t yet had any major side effects, which was the main concern. If you do start them you will need a follow up appointment a couple of weeks later just to check you are finding them ok. Can’t comment on whether they have been effective yet!

I started it on Friday, I too was concerned about taking meds but I can’t continue to let this rule my life.

Been on them a year. Total life changer. I ran out of meds for four days and the anxiety returned and i couldn't believe i had lived like that for so long. Only side effect is vivid dreams for me- totally worth it though. Life is too short.

Thank you all - can I ask did you start on a low dose and work up? Dr just gave me 50mg tablets to take one per day - no advice on building up gradually or what time of day to take them. No mention of follow up whatsoever. I do need to do something about my anxiety - it's ruining every part of my life - but I just feel fobbed off.

I was also given 50mg to take in the morning. Maybe book another appointment with the doctor after a week or two?
