Stigma

I know a lot of people in my community that are positively contributing towards helping people with mental health problems however some don't have first -hand or even second-hand experience of it and it just seems so superficial , even people who work in the mental -health field that I have come across know a lot from words in a book but not from personal experience . I hear a lot of people talking about the "stigma" of mental health problems . Really ? Is there a stigma ? This seems to be a central issue, however In my opinion it is UNDERSTANDING and warm genuine SUPPORT that are things that are missing within the mental health sector . Do people agree ?I'm also wondering if there really is a stigma regarding mental health issues nowadays ? and what would one define as stigma ?

There's definitely a stigma. I have borderline personality disorder and have experienced first hand the look on medical professionals faces when they see that diagnosis. I'm also a professional in a respected job but had to disclose my medication which led to management finding out about my BPD. As a result I regularly have "catch ups" with my boss who treats me like a bomb that can go off any second despite my condition never infering with my job in 6 years LMAO x

Yes there is still stigma. I have schizophrenia. My previous diagnosis was bipolar and so I just tell people I have bipolar because it's less stigmatised, thanks to the likes of Stephen Fry. Funnily enough, no celebrities have come forward to say they have schizophrenia, even though it affects 1 in 100 people. So, there must be a few.
