Hello,

I’ve just started to take anti depressants and I am now suffering with insomnia I have read this is a side effect of my medication but unsure what I’m suppose to do. Could it Be this will settle down once the medication is in my system more? I’ve been taking them for less than a week? Thanks.

Hello. I think that can be a side effect (I felt drowsy rather than insomnia) but then so many things can be symptoms of the depression / anxiety too. I think give it a couple of weeks and talk to your doctor (I assume you have a follow up appointment anyway if you’ve just started taking them). For me the drowsiness settled down in a few weeks.

Good luck.

Thank you! I didn’t wanna go rushing back to the doctor about this if it perhaps is something that might settle Down. I’ll keep taking them and see if it settles down any and wait until my follow up appointment if not. Thanks for your reply.

What medication is it? I’m on 100mg sertraline, when they first upped my dose I couldn’t sleep either. I was given diazepam to relax me and was told to reduce the diazepam as my body adjusts to the medication. 6 weeks in on the new dose, no longer using diazepam, I do have my bad nights but a lot easier now the sertaline has kicked in and my mind isn’t 1000% on the go all the time.

Bigpizzalover, I’ve started off on fluxotine 20mg which I believe is the smallest dose as the doctor said would look at increasing the dosage if needed on my review appointment. Do you think It could just settle down then? I can get to sleep i Just wake up regularly for long periods during the night and then stuggle to get back to sleep as my mind feels wide awake. Thanks for all your help, your advise is really appreciated.

That's the same anti depressant that I take, the same dosage too. I think it effected my sleep too (and possibly gave me heartburn also for a few weeks) but after the first couple of months my sleep pattern has returned to normal.

I take it just before I go to bed, my GP said I could switch to taking it in the mornings if it effected my sleep and I prefer. When do you take yours?

Hi Jane, thanks for your reply. The first couple of days I took them before bed as I was worried they would make me feel groggy during the day. When I noticed it was affecting my sleep I have taken them in the morning (since yesterday) I slept a little better last night however I didn’t go bed until quite late as I had a family party so I didn’t know if the reason I woke up less is because I’d gone to bed later than usual. I will see if it’s any better tonight fingers crossed! I just wanted to check that I should be giving it time to adjust and not just stop taking them due to the lack of sleep?! Thanks.

Give it a few weeks. I've tried 4 antidepressants and 3 of them were utter twatbadgers for the first 3 weeks. I think it's pretty par for the course.
