which antidepressants can you take whilst trying to conceive?

is there anything that is 100% safe? i am on 20mg citolapram at the moment, started 8 weeks ago and feel full of energy and very well.

As you know, I've posted on your threads before. I'm taking Citalopram and am now 14 weeks pg.

I have been told Citalopram is one of the few you can take whilst ttc and pregnancy.

th e ideal is to not be on any, but many many women are and have perfect babies, myself icluded. have a word with your gp if you're worried, but a happy mummy on ads is better than a sad one any day

I took Dothiepin, now called Dosulepin, while ttc and through pregnancy. It's one of the older type of ads, a tricyclic, and I was told there had been loads more research on those and that it would be fine. That advice came from my old boss, a Consultant Psychiatrist, so that was good enough for me!

nbg, I remember you. My gp is adamant that I shouldn't try to concieve on Citalopram. Didn't discuss options with her though. Will go back and see her, or maybe see another gp. The odd thing is that being on Citalopram makes me feel as happy and together as I felt when I was pregnancy.

I saw a maternal pyschiatrist when I was pg. She dealt with pregnancy and tablets all day.

She told me safest drugs are prozac, amitrptiline, imipramine and nortriptiline. These are the ones that have the most data on them.

I was on amitriptiline all pregnancy. DD is absolutely fine

I was on sertraline when I conceived both ds and dd2 - psychiatrist and obstetrician said it was fine - the stress of a depressed mummy is far more damagig to baby (stress hormones restrict growth, I think i remember them telling me) but the ads were fine.

hi ians, i conceived whilst on paroxetine
(aka seroxat) - im still on it and bf a 4month old very happy, healthy boy. My GP was rather nasty to me about it (not a wise move when talking to someone who is depressed and concerned for her unborn child!) and i was referred to a specialist who was very angry with my GP and wrote in my hospital notes that continued use of my ADs was absolutely fine. I know people say that a healthy happy mum is the most important thing, but you also need to be reassured that you are not causing harm to your child. I read absolutely every study i could find about it, and they all said there may be a very slight risk of increasing abnormalities, however - no one tests drugs on pregnant women - usually they are tested on men, so therefore they cant say that ads are totally safe for pregnant women and have to cover their backs. Dont know if thats any help. I bet even if you werent on ads you would stress about what you were eating/drinking etc - we will always find something to beat ourselves up about! Good luck.

by the way, having my son has just about cured my depression of 14years - its the BEST thing ive ever done. (and the hardest)

I conceived on citalopram and bf for 2 years on it and am trying for no. 2 on it. I have a great gp who sent me to the specialist for their opinion and it is fine. Out of curtessy I checked with paeds when lo was born and they were ok with it too. Your gp is not informed!

Just seen this thread. I've just unsuccessfully tried to come off citalopram, and now back on 20mg. Not feeling much better yet, but have just moved house and finding the stress intolerable! Can't concentrate, and am sure I'm about to get fired! I've asked lots of specialists about being on ADs when pregnant, and one said best to come off, incase something went wrong and you'd never forgive yourself. But then my doctor said a friend of hers has just had a baby on citalopram and all is fine. But then another friend of mine had her baby on ADs and has just found out he's ever so slightly autistic. I don't know who to ask or who's right?!?
