Family member with depression

Hi all,
I was just wondering if anyone has experience of a family member suffering from depression and how you've coped with it? My mum has been diagnosed with having depression and has been on tablets for about 4 months now. She has said she doesn't really feel any different and has good days and bad days. We were a very close family and she seems to just be pushing everyone away. We all used to go round for dinner on a Friday night which has now stopped and I would go round on a Saturday with my son as she would look after my niece but she's said that's a bit too much also. I've recently had a conversation with her about childcare for my son when I go back to work as she always said she wanted to help however she has said there is not a good day for her to give up work. It is not an issue for us at all but my dad has said after we had the conversation she then went home and cried as my mother in law would be having my son 3 days a week. Which is not the case and was not mentioned. I am just struggling to understand how to handle the situation. Also I do appreciate she must be going through much worse.
