Returning to work after ds surgery

Hi,

My ds (age 5) had major heart surgery 2 weeks ago and I’m due to return to work on Wednesday.

Although he’s recovered well, I don’t think I can leave him yet. I’m barely sleeping and so anxious about leaving him in case something goes wrong.

My unsympathetic employer only granted one week paid compassionate paid leave, and I have taken a weeks unpaid leave too. I really can’t afford to lose anymore pay but am a nervous wreck at the thought of going back yet.

Am thinking of going to the gp to see if I can be signed off for stress/anxiety. I’ve never been signed off for anything before. Is this feasiable?

Hi OP

What about parental leave?

I should add that parental leave is unpaid. Would your employer be willing to give you some annual leave presuming you have some left? Speak to your manager and explain that due to what's happening with your son you don't feel able to cope at work and see what they say.

I would leave getting a sick note as the last option.
