No childhood memories

Hi, I’ve just started counselling, naturally we started at my childhood. I explained I have little, if no memory of my childhood except I knew I never felt loved or wanted but otherwise it just seemed like an uneventful time. It just worries me that it’s not there, I only really have these pretend memories that are made up from looking at the same photos over the years (if that makes sense) could something of made me block them out or do some people just forget?

I guess now in my late 30s it is very difficult to remember anything from being young (under 14 im thinking) unless there were specifically amazingly good or really bad times. I remember fleeting moments of holidays or learning something new or fun or doing my hobby which was done religiously for years, but if there wasn't anything special to remember i can see how your memory would seem quite limited.

That makes me feel a bit more normal thank you. When I talk to friends and family they seem to be to reel off all these childhood stories quite vividly whereas I have nothing really.

dh can hardly remember his childhood, the only way he recalls stuff is when his siblings remind him of things. There doesn't seem to be any kind of blocking out, he just doesn't remember much.

Same with my dh, he remembers diddly from his childhood. All the stuff I remember is stupid little things like getting into trouble for using the internet, and getting wet in the playground in primary school.

I remember very little. I never have. I have a good memory, so I can remember specific conversations I've had in adulthood, but I remember nothing much before my teenage years, and even then it's very spotty memories.
Most of my memories I do have are due to photographs or something a relative has told me as opposed to me physically remembering things.
I remember my mum favouring my brother, I don't have fond memories of holidays etc. My childhood was very non eventful.
