Citalopram 10mg

Hi, I’ve been struggling with anxiety and low mood for a while now and my gp has prescribed me 10mg Citalopram today.

I have taken this before 7 years ago to treat anxiety and was started on 20mg. I didn’t like the initial side effects although they settled after a while.

Will the 10mg work as a starting dose or is it going to take me twice as long to notice any difference?

I'm no medical expert but I would think it all depends on how bad your anxiety is and how it works for each individual. I have been on 10mg before and it did help but this time round I felt they weren't improving how I felt after a couple of months & I went back to my gp who upped it to 20mg. I always feel worse before I feel better on them, whatever dose I take.
Hope you feel a bit better soon Flowers

I've been on Citalopram at 10mg for years and have no intention of ever coming off it! It really makes a difference to my anxiety but obviously everyone is different and just because I've found it makes a big difference, you may find that it's not really helping. Having said that, I suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder to a relatively minor extent and there are times during the winter when I feel I could double the dose, but I am happy on 10mgs so I just suck it up.

Most GPs like to start at the lowest dose to find out what is going to be the best therapeutic level. It goes without saying that getting away with the lowest dose that you can manage is going to be better for you.

You should notice a difference within a week to 10 days. If after a couple of weeks you genuinely feel no benefit then it would be worth talking to your doctor about increasing.

Yes I maintained on 10mg myself for about 18 months and felt that was just enough to keep my anxiety at a manageable level.
