On SSRIs for 20+ years - risks?

I’ve been on ADs almost my whole adult life and stable on citalopram since it was licensed in the UK. The GP doesn’t seem that bothered but I am concerned about long term effects. I know it’ll take me ages to come off it but I’m prepared for that. Has anyone any experience or advice? Surely depression in my 20s won’t mean depression for ever?

I've been taking AD's for a good 10 years now.....I've never considered the possible long term risks. I've pretty much accepted il take them for life.

I guess the risk of not being on them outweighs the risk of being on

Thanks for your reply.
I just wonder if I actually need them still? Risks include higher cholesterol and various GI effects id like to get rid of.

Do you think they are working positively for you?? If not then I'd go back to the doctors

Hard to tell after so many years!
Seems wasteful for the NHS too if I just carry on taking them indefinitely without necessarily needing to.

I've take. Ad now for 25 years.
I was on citalopram for 10 years but have been taking fluoxetine (Prozac) now for 18 months.
I changed to Prozac as citalopram seemed not to work for me any more.
Huge weight gain low mood. I felt amazing for 12 first 12 months on Prozac.

However, I find they are not working as well for me as they were, I have low mood and no libido.
I am loathe to go to Dr as I just feel an inevitability that this is how things are for me.

I think it's just part of my psyche and low mood is something I have to accept.
Without Prozac I would stay in bed/house all day.
