Trying to forgive self

Not sure if this is right place. This is very identifying and have been thinking about posting for a couple of weeks, as this will be very vague. Since very young I was led to believe I'd been responsible for something and have found out that this is not the case. Much of my personality/life decisions has involved self blame and beating myself up. I know I can't change the past but I am not sure how to go forward and not make decisions based on the old view of myself. (I shouldn't have been punishing myself anyway I now realise.)
Any recommendations for books/techniques which might help?

Hi op,sorry you've been through such a long traumatic period ,I've no book suggestions but you can start each day with a mantra like, "I am a wonderful person,I love me and today I am going to enjoy my life and live it for me"and then do just that. You are free of a weight you have carried too long.leave it in the past and go on to enjoy your life.Flowers

Thank you KarmaStar that's very kind and a good idea. I'll pin that on my fridge.
