Citalopram and breastfeeding

Hi everyone

I was wondering if anyone has had experience of taking citalopram while breastfeeding and knows of any risks or side effects to the LO?

DD is 15 weeks old and I’ve had anxiety issues for quite a while. I came off citalopram to try for a baby and I’m starting to see signs my mental health is deteriorating but I’m worried about going back on medication

Any help or advice would be appreciated

I took citalopram while breastfeeding and remember being really worried it would affect my baby. I discussed it with my doctor and that made me happy it was low risk and the best option for me. I'm off it now and have a very healthy and happy toddler. Best to chat to your GP about it and they can talk it through with you.

Hello, congratulations on your baby! Im sorry about your anxiety but you are 100% doing the right thing to seek help again. I’m not sure which but I was on anxiety medication while pregnant and breastfeeding and it was safe and I was much happier and healthier as a result. See the doctor ASAP (and perhaps check with La Leche league as they might have a list of safe meds for breastfeeding). Best of luck.
