Hi all.

I was put on 20mg citalopram and 80mg propranolol for depression and anxiety about 10 weeks ago. Had a review 3 weeks ago and was put on 40mg and got another review in 3 weeks. I go to university full time and they have a counselling service but it's only 6 sessions and my last one is next week. Asked my GP at the last appointment about counselling and she gave me some places to check out but I thought it would be a referral thing? This just seems to be self referral. It's difficult to find somewhere nearby that offers free counselling. I found the counselling really helpful and I'm gutted that I've only got one session left because I really like my counsellor.

Also wondering if anyone knows how to get a diagnosis? Do I just ask my GP for a psychiatrist referral?

Thanks!

Hi sorry to hear that you can't continue with your current counsellor - its not helpful I know when you've connected with someone you like.
Might be worth double checking this again with the uni services? Yes you do have to self refer for counselling - bear in mid there will be a waiting list which will vary depending where you are. In Belfast there is PIPS, Bridge of Hope, NEw Life Counselling(depending on your age).AWARE is also a very useful organisation. Have a look at their website - they do some excellent Wellbeing Programmes including Living Life to the Full which you can self refer to. Yes you would need to ask your GP for a referral to a psychiatrist for a diagnosis - there is a very long waiting list for this service. Lifeline is also there - for everyone! Look after yourself and good luck!

Thank you very much for all of the information! I'll definitely have a look at those and get get the ball rolling. I'm not too worried about the psychiatrist waiting list so I'll ask at my next appointment for that too.
