Propranolol for Anxiety

I've been off work for a month with stress and anxiety. The time off has meant the stress issue has reduced dramatically but it anxiety remains, tightness in my chest, tingling fingers etc.

My GP has been pushing long term medication i.e. sertraline which I declined due to the requirement to take them for a longish period of time. After much debate he has prescribed Propranolol as a short term 'as and when' measure.

I'm going back to work on Monday so anticipate that I am going to need to take one to help get me in the office and through the back to work meetings.

Does anyone have experience of taking this for anxiety? what should I expect / anything I should be aware of before taking?

I take propranolol for anxiety and can honestly say it has been a game changer! It slows down my racing heart and helps me deal with situations I would previously have avoided. I had no side effects and just take them about half an hour before I am going out. Why don't you try taking one at home rather than waiting for Monday? Good luck going back to work!

What dose have you been prescribed?

I was prescribed 10mg three times a day a couple of years ago, but didnt want to take them long term. I was then told verbally by a GP that I could take 40mg as and when, which I know is an appropriate dose, but when I'm at the point of it being a good idea to take it, I get too freaked out (health anxiety!) and can't quite bring myself to do it. Thus I have a supply of meds that would probably help, yet I'm too anxious to take them Confused

I take 10 or 20 mg as needed. The doctor has said I can take up to 40 but I haven't felt like I wanted to take that much. 20 mg definitely has an effect on my panic symptoms. About to take some soon as I am going out shopping and that sets my anxiety off! I was very apprehensive about taking them but got to the point where I was too worried to leave the house. I have just started sertraline too as I was still feeling anxious and overwhelmed by everyday issues. Only on day 2 so we will see how that goes.

I sort of take it for anxiety (overactive thyroid, it helps dampen down all the peripheral stuff which includes anxiety) 160mg (2x 80mg) it's helpful and I like how easy it is to go on and off as needed.

I take 40mg when I can feel a panic attack coming on - not every time, just when it feels like it's going to be a particularly bad one (I get stage fright and do a fair bit of public speaking, for example)

I find it incredibly helpful

I take atenolol (similar) and it's amazing. I was having crippling anxiety and daily panic attacks and now one of these a day is enough to keep it away. I keep spares on me in case of an imminent attack, but never needed to take extra.
