Drug misuse while TTC

We hae been TTC for a while now and I have just found out my DH is using illegal drugs.

Short background..... he was addicted 6-7 years ago, before we met, but has been clean ever since. We had a little DS a year ago and the stress of that and of being the breadwinner has got to him.... What can I say?
I'm chocked and confused.

If I am pregnant, will this have caused any damage? What does heroin do to sperm?

Does anyone know about these things?

So sorry for you - hope you get the info. you need. I'm sure it's infinitely better that it wasn't you doing the drugs. Lots of love xx

I don't think it would harm the baby but being exposed to it whilst pregnant is a big no no. What drugs is he using?

anontonight · 21/03/2007 21:47

Hillary, heroin.
Steinermum, I know, I don't even touch alcohol (or caffeine for that matter).

Don't think it does anything to sperm. Don't know where you can get info from. Google it maybe? Real problem is if woman is using when pregnant, as baby will be born an addict. At least that doesn't apply to you. Good luck x

I'd worry about him injecting and contracting something there, I'm so sorry for you at a time like this too!

Will he get help? Such a biggie

anontonight · 21/03/2007 22:01

Yes Hillary, he is getting help.
Also, he is not injecting.
But thank you for support

A quick google has confirmed my suspicions - this tends to cause infertility (not much sperm, slow-moving sperm, etc etc) in men, rather than birth defects in any resulting baby.

This is par for the course with male fertility problems, from what I know. Rather than causing birth defects, you tend to end up with non-viable sperm, and no baby.

NQC, thank you for that.

Does he share equipment? Even if he smokes but shares smoking kit, he can still get Hepatitis B. Maybe he knows how to use it safely?
