Declaring PTSD on new job application?

Just got a new PT role (whoo hoo) and was a bit worried that a health questionnaire asked:

Answer YES or NO to:
Have you ever had any anxiety, depression, mental illness?

So I said 'yes PTSD' and actually added a note about i as I felt I needed to clarify the scenario (attempting to help a victim of a very violent crime resulting in insomnia and anxiety now treated). I also had to declare that I took around 20 days off for it. The job is only mine when I've passed this aspect and considered 'fit and well' to do the role.

So I am a bit worried. I know I am fit and well now, but will they? Apparently the form goes to an in house health professional for evaluation, but the admin dept will have seen it too. I was quite embarrassed though I know I shouldn't be.

I've had to do the same thing. They wanted me to talk to an Occupational Health adviser. Though I never actually did because my boss found out the reasons for my PTSD (traumatic birth) and immediately told them to do one!

Regardless, they can't discount you on that basis, I hope that it will be a simple interview. They probably want to know that your treatment course has been completed.

Don't feel embarrassed, no-one will think any less of you for having a serious condition.

Good luck!

Both my husband and I have declared periods of mental illness on our health screening questionairres. The most I've ever had is someone phone to see if I was feeling better now or if it was ongoing and I don't think my husbamd has even had that.

Thanks LLISH and NLAC - good to know. I guess I'll have to wait and see

I also had to declare mental health issues on a job application. Someone from OH phoned me, I explained the background and what treatment I'd had - they said they were impressed how well I'd coped and that they were completely happy to pass my application.
