Finding a therapist

Maybe the title should say 'choosing' a therapist. I know how to search for local, accredited therapists. But how do people decide who might be a good fit for them iyswim? Do you just go out on a limb and book a session with someone who has a profile you like the look of?

They do it in different ways. Some have a 15 minute phone call first if you want. Some you have to make the first appointment with.

How do you know it's the rights therapist for you? Aside from having proper qualifications and being a member of a professional body (like BACP), if you like them that's good. They should be willing to answer any questions you have about their qualifications (not their personal life) and experience. If they are not happy with you asking questions then you have to wonder if that's the right person for you. You need to feel comfortable with them. Don't be afraid to say you want a first appointment to see if you think you can work together - they will know that it's important for you to find the right person for you.
