hi i know i could probably find the answer on some other thread -but can someone advise me on what anti depressants are the safest to take when breastfeeding-baby is 19 weeks old.GP is reluctant to prescribe whilst feeding but health visitoe thinks they would be beneficial.he did mention sertraline-but some of the side effects for baby sounded risky.thanks.

I took Dothiepin, now called Dosulepin. It's one of the older style ads, known as tricyclics. I don't know which one is "safest" though and not all ads suit all people, so you would need to find one that is right for you too.

Amitryptiline is oldest anti-depressant on market so will have a lot of data re breastfeeding. I was put on it when pregnant, and I had my doubts about how good it was. However it is a fantastic anti depressant, which as a very calming effect.
I saw a maternal pyshciatrist (spelling?) when pregnant (someone who deals with pregnant and postnatal mums)and she told me it was safe. It isn't a new or trendy drug, but I think it is a lot better than the likes of sertraline. Hope this helps.

I took sertraline whilst pregnant and also whilst breasfeeding. DD seems to be fine to me (and I am much much better than I would have been without it)
