Advice on increasing Citalopram

If I increase my dose from 20-40mg will I suffer the initial side affects again? GP suggested the increase but forgot to ask this question. Recently diagnosed with pnd. Baby is two months old. Am struggling and feel I'm sliding back in to a very dark place. I was severely suicidal after the birth and I'm scared I'm going back there. Thanks

I've just been increased to 30mg from 20mg with no side effects. Would that be worth considering and then up it to 40mg after a couple of weeks if you feel ok?

Thanks Marymouse. I might split a second tablet today and give that a go. I felt so much worse when I first began medication. Ended up in hospital, just hoping I don't feel like that again.

I started citalopram about 18 months ago and the first six weeks was so awful, however I've moved up and down between 20 and 40 mg a few times and haven't really noticed any side effects. Maybe a bit of clenchy jaw but nothing like the first bit. Best of luck to you.

Tuff, I went up to 40 for very similar reasons to you and didn't notice the side affects. I am sorry you are going through this, its a really shit thing x

Thanks for the good advice everyone. I've just taken 30 plus 80mg of propranolol as I'm feeling really shaky. Luckily dh is home today so he's taking over with the children.

Hi. So far the side affects have been managable, the most annoying one is an increase in twitching. Which is more annoying than anything. Really struggled to sleep last night but think that's the illness rather than meds. Mostly feel flat and a bit empty today. Thanks for asking. Hope everyone else is ok.

I went from 20 to 40 when I was on it a few years ago. No side effects apart from being a bit twitchy.

20 to 30 was horrible for me causing an anxiety spike, similar to starting on citalopram. However my GP wasn't expecting this so I was probably unlucky. Good luck with your new dose OP.

how long did your side effects last? i increased from 20mg to 30 a few days ago and i feel dreadful! the nausea and brain fog has been unbearable

I had too a couple of years ago now my mood was so low there was no choice, but I’m glad I did, they can’t up them again but at least I cope now,
