Self harm and ice

I heard a thing on the radio saying that if you feel like you want to self harm, you should go and hold some ice instead...

My mum is in fostering, and often has self harmers - does anyone know if it is at all effective in easing the need?

(I hope it isn't too personal to ask that...)

Sorry, no experiences of this but I have previously read that putting hands into a very cold bowl of water can help. Sounds like a simillar thing.

It would probably depend if the self harm is focused on pain. Holding ice hurts but I don't know. Is there a website that would give helpful advice on how to deal with this? Might be good info for your mum.

Website

This might help with info.

I was thinking the same about it only working if it was focussed on pain. I remember an ex telling me that he did it as cutting sort of released the pressure inside him, so just holding something probably wouldn't help.
