Mental health

Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. If you have medical concerns, please seek medical attention.

Probably a silly question and I'm sorry but...

Someone has asked if I'm depressed.

I don't know.

How would I know?

Feeling depressed may feel differently from person to person. However there are some symptoms that are recognised as being markers for depression.
Disturbed sleep is one. Not being able to get to sleep because your mind is thinking negative thoughts. Or waking up in the night and not being able to get back to sleep.
Crying for no reason. Feeling restless and feeling full of anxiety. So much so that you feel ill.
Feeling everything is black and being unable to smile. Feelings of detachment as though you are looking at the world from outside yourself. Wanting to self harm and thinking it is pointless to continue.
Any of these ring a bell?
All is not lost though as the treatment for depression is good. The trick is to recognise it and get help before it becomes really bad.
Go to your GP and discuss how you feel with him/ her. They will have seen it al before, so don't be embarrassed.
If you have got depression, you are in good company as so did Virginia Wolf and many other famous people. It is the most common illness in the population.

Triple, there are online tests you can do - think there's one on the NHS website - or you can do the questionnaires in the For Dummies book on depression or the Overcoming one.
