So Confused What Would You Do?

Please let me know what you would do in my situation. I went to my GP recently for a drug review and he told me the 2 drugs I was taking were not good together because of the risk of cardiac arrhythmias and having been on them for 5 years together should stop one of them. They are both antidepressants Amitriptyline 50mg (which I use for migraine prevention) and Escitalopram 20mg for anxiety/depression.

I have tried to cut down the Amitriptyline as advised and my migraines have returned and are severe. My GP wrote to the Psychiatrist for some advice and he has said today there is no problem with these 2 drugs together. However, I have found out that GPs were advised in 2011 that these drugs as a combination were not a good idea as they both can cause cardiac arrhythmias in their own right. I am concerned and lost please help.

I'm on escitalopram as well, have been on it for 6 years and I have no issues with cardiac arrhythmias. I think you should ask to be referred to a psychiatrist if you're not under the care of one already. They are in a much better place to be considering different combinations of medication, GPs don't really have enough specialist knowledge or experience. Can you also ask to be referred to a migraine clinic? I don't suffer from them myself but a friend does and she was able to try different treatments, e.g. botox which apparently has helped.
