Old fashioned Tricyclic antidepressants

Hi, Is anyone else worried about coverage in the news concerning a possible connection between tricyclic antidepressants and the increased risk of dementia? They also mentioned some over the counter meds that also have anticholinergic effects.

I take only 50mg of Amitriptyline now with Escitalopram 20mg daily but for many years took Doxepin (another Tricyclic). I wonder how seriously to take this and whether I should come off of the Amitriptyline.

You and me both! They did do the research with elderly people though so I don't know if that makes a difference as of course there is a higher incidence of dementia in older people. Also the over the counter meds they are talking about have been taken by so many of the population a bigger study must be needed.

Yes I read it, but was on 100mg of Imipramine for 13 years!! Came off for 1 year and back on them for 5 years till I changed to Sertraline middle of last year. I'm not going to stress about it - no point, as I can't change anything. AND I'M 71 !! Do you know anything more about this research - I only read a sentence or two in the paper (and can't remember much about the bit I did read!!) Ha! Dementia on the way...........I do find it worrying though how they are predicting the numbers of people who will have Alzheimers in the future - very scary.
