Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale??!!!

Nat777 · 12/10/2006 20:09

I have just scored 14 and I am sure I read that over 9 is a sure sign of depression. I know this isnt much info, but any experts out there who can confirm this? Is this really bad? Please reply, thank you

The test they use down here, if your score over 13, they suggest you see GP. How do you feel?

Perigrine · 12/10/2006 20:14

How do you actually feel in yourself? Do you feel like you are not coping?

Nat777 · 12/10/2006 20:17

Oh my god, I cant believe it! I knew something was wrong but why? I have a beautiful 14 month old girl, nice house, partner, well paid part time job. I should be ok.

I just get so stressed easily, feel panicky and anxious, I feel sad quite often and things generally have been getting on top of me.

It is not consuming my life but I am becoming more and more aware of it.

it is an indication of depression, but needs to be looked at in conjunction with other subjective information

are you coping
are you tearful
changes in sleep pattern
changes in weigh ( gaining & losing significantly in a short space)
low self esteem
loss of libido
etc.....

do you feel you are depressed - i had PND and so did a lot of other mums i know.....

Nat777 · 12/10/2006 20:18

What I cant get my head around is how bad it is, it is not terrible and I am coping but I am not right. I find it very difficult to put into words, not sure if I am making sense. Sorry.

How long has this been going on? Has anything changed recently, change in routine? changes at home? DD being different in any way

lulumama · 12/10/2006 20:19

should be ok

but you are not - so don't feel bad - we all struggle to cope and it is harder to admit when things look rosy from the outside....

Nat777 · 12/10/2006 20:20

are you coping
YES, BUT GET VERY STRESSED
are you tearful
RECENTLY I HAVE BEEN
changes in sleep pattern
SLIGHTLY MORE DIFFICULT TO GET TO SLEPP
changes in weigh ( gaining & losing significantly in a short space)
NOT REALLY
low self esteem
NOT REALLY
loss of libido
SLIGHTLY, BUT IS IMPROVING!

I routinely score 11 and the 'cut-off' is 12. It doesn't mean there's anything wrong with you, just that it might be good to talk, as the advert used to say.

Nat777 · 12/10/2006 20:21

No, nothing changed at home at all. Work has been VERY stressful recently, but that is starting to calm down.

Thanks guys x

Do you think I need to talk to someone? I know it isnt much to go on!

well..

i am not a doctor - just someone who had chronic depression for 4 years- but did get better !

sounds like you are teetering on the brink of something. but you are not falling yet.

have a chat with someone by all means, if only to reassure yourself you are ok....or at least not in the grip of a deep depression!

take some time out to nurture yourself, and look after yourself, its hard going with a toddler and a stressful job..

you have recognized you are perhaps slipping a bit, so won;t take much to get you back to fighting fit!

Perigrine · 12/10/2006 20:30

I think you need to go and talk to your GP, and your DP and take it from there. I let it go and it got better, the second time it got worse, make an appointment and speak about it!!!!

Really appreciate your replys and advice, thanks soo much
