I am depressed. Scored 20/27 on a depression test by GP.

Nope, no weight gain. Sertraline keeps me on an even keel & keeps my anxiety under control - not planning on stopping taking it ever unless I absolutely have to. Be warned though - the side effects are horrific for the first couple of weeks.

SoleSource · 30/04/2014 21:14

Oh good to hear Chuckle. I took my first 50mg tablet this evening. Here goes! GP wants to up dose to 100mg in two weeks. Bit scared of the side effects. I will take tomorrows does just before bedtime.

I stated on thursday, so day 6. First day or two I was incredibly nauseous and then a bit spaced. Incredibly sleepy but then I was sleepy anyway.

I really hope it kicks in at some point. Funnily enough I was worried about eight gain. I've got an eating disorder and I'm already huge.

ElizabethJennings · 30/04/2014 21:25

SoleSource · 30/04/2014 21:36

Ooh really elizabeth?! I've got about 5 stone to lose...

I dont think I've eaten as much so far but I've felt rough on it! I'm hoping it's settling down.

have you taken the tablet sole? Are you working tomorrow? The first 48 hours were horrible!

SoleSource · 30/04/2014 22:45

Tablet taken, just starting to feel quite tired.

How much did you lose Elizabeth, over how long? Did the medication suppress your appetite?

I'm on 100mg didn't affect weight either way.

Megbeth · 01/05/2014 06:57

I've been on this for years. No weight gain. To alleviate side effects I've always been told to break the tablet in 1/2 for the first 2 weeks. So take 25mg. You may get a slighttape upset tummy & headache & just feel a bit weird but the 1/2 dose lessens that.
I've tried other AD's & always end up on this one.

Megbeth · 01/05/2014 06:57
  • slight upset tummy
ElizabethJennings · 01/05/2014 07:36

I lost about a stone. I think it stopped me comfort eating.

dontrunwithscissors · 01/05/2014 08:03

I gained weight.

Geraldthegiraffe · 01/05/2014 08:55

It would be amazing if it stopped me comfort eating! That's one of my major problems.

SoleSource · 01/05/2014 13:44

Glad to read you're feeling better solesource

I was on this in the past and my appetite was reduced for a good few weeks but then went back to normal

theywillgrowup · 02/05/2014 19:39

hi op,

was on it for 13yrs 400mg i think, dont really remember any nasty effects but i started along time ago

weight gain, well i have put on approx 3stone but that has been in the last 5yrs,poor diet and mental health contributed to that i think and not the meds, also at one point i did shed one and half stone while on it (all back on now though) Shock

i stopped taking it as i felt it had become ineffective and have now been diagnosed as bipolar and am on meds that guarantee weight gain

sorry to waffle but no i dont think it causes weight gain in most

good luck

ScarlettDarling · 02/05/2014 19:49

I've been on it about 5 months. I have gained a bit of weight but i think that's because i feel ok now and im eating properly again. Before i went on it i was an anxious bag of nerves and not enjoying my food and got a bit scrawny . Im back to a normal weight now, 10 and half stone and im 5' 10'', so im happy with that. Good luck with the sertraline ...it really has made a diff to me. Im on 50 mg a day, had a grotty couple of weeks at the start and the odd wobbly week since, but i feel more normal than i have in a long time. Good luck!

SoleSource · 03/05/2014 13:24

Oh thank you, all positive replies :)

I feel a bit stoned and slow but motivation to get up and sort house out has arrived!

This drug seems to really work for most people. :)

I've been on out for about 6 months. Think I'm a couple of pounds less than when I started Smile

SagaNorensLeatherTrousers · 03/05/2014 13:29

I lost 2 stone on it.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 03/05/2014 16:50

Give it a really good try, say a couple of months at least. A first I felt a little weird but now I feel much better.

Think the weight thing is twofold for me. Before Setraline I was drinking a fair bit of wine and eating lots of chocolate. Now I hardly touch either. Also, I feel more inclined to cook healthy meals. Tonight we are having salmon with new potatoes and salad instead of a takeaway so the DC are looking healthier and DH is gradually loosing weight too Smile

GimmeDaBoobehz · 03/05/2014 16:57

I'm not too sure as been on it for 7 years, so hard to say.

I find it hard to lose weight on it though as in if I slightly indulge, I put on a hell of a lot of weight.

The benefits outweigh the negatives though - ie very bad depression.

Geraldthegiraffe · 03/05/2014 16:57

I feel awful - I'm on about day 9 and although I'm not sick anymore I just feel even more exhausted and not motivated to do anything at all.

I think my appetite is reduced but I guess that's only short term.

How long does it take to feel better? I guess I'm less anxious but its partly as I'm not caring about anything.

IloveJudgeJudy · 03/05/2014 17:04

DD (17) started sertraline about 2/3 weeks ago. She took 25mg for the first week and is now taking 50 mg. I would say her appetite has decreased (she was taking arapiprazole before).

The change in her mood has been tremendous. Fingers crossed that it will last. Good luck, OP. I hope sertraline works for you.

SoleSource · 03/05/2014 17:36

Up to 8 weeks to settle, MN friend in PM just advised me. " Giraffe.

I had to drive somewhere today, not good idea.

Thanks Judy, so pleased for you and your DD.
