Just started Prozac, does this sound normal?

Gp started me on 20mgs Prozac on Monday for anxiety and I have been feeling pretty grotty since. I feel nauseous, dizzy, agitated and quite anxious, I also can't sleep (am awake since 1.30am). I don't have those symptoms all the time, more on and off but especially during the night. Tonight is particularly bad and I am wondering is it because I took the tablet at 7pm instead of earlier in the day (I was trying to see would it help with insomnia, it didn't). I know it can take some time to get used to taking meds like this, does my experience sound usual for starting on Prozac and how long does it normally take to settle down? Reassure me please :)

Yes it does sound normal and the side effects of starting SSRI usually abate in a few weeks.
That said, Prozac wouldn't be my drug of choice for someone with anxiety as the primary presenting symptom, as it can be quite anxiety provoking for some (it makes my anxiety worse), so if you find that you are still feeling anxious in a few weeks time, there are other drugs to try. But in the meantime, stick with it :)

Thanks, I will definitely keep taking them for a few weeks and see how I feel then. I feel very anxious physically today, worse than usual in fact, but I had an idea that wasn't uncommon and I just need to plough on through it. Ugh the joys of meds :)

yes my anxiety got worse but just for a few days though. Now it has reduced so worth persevering

I am feeling a bit better today, not quite so anxious and a lot less nauseous. The only thing now really is a nagging headache for the past few days but that could easily be hormonal as I am due my period !
