Hi, I was on here not long ago looking for help about my depression/anxiety. I bit the bullet and went to the doctor this morning. Felt like the worst mum in the world telling the doctor about my issues in front of the kids which didn't help matters.

He's prescribed me with setraline and after reading the leaflet I'm in a state. It's obviously going to get worse before it gets better and he said I might feel quite ill with it.

Hope someone else might be able to hold my hand through this cause I'm dreading taking my first pill tonight xx

I was same. Not depressed just very anxious did nt wanna take anything. I eventually did and was prescribed fluoxetine was horrendous and me low and depressed. Side effects were awful.

Doctor then prescribed me sertraline and it's been amazing so far four weeks on I'm starting to feel much more myself. What im trying to say is all tablets r different what doesn't work for one will work for another so hang in there.
Yes the side effects may effect you but chances are (hopfully) they won't. I didn't suffer much with sertraline il be honest. I did feel nauseous and suffer the odd bad head on a night time, was constantly hungry too. But all have subsided ( within a week) and im much happier and calmer.
Good luck. Here if u need to ask anything else.

Flowery, I have been on it 2 weeks and had side effects for the first week - nausea mainly. See my other thread if you like. I feel SO much better now and am really really glad I went to the doctors.

Good luck

Hi flowerydems
I've been on setraline for about 6 weeks now and I just wanted to tell you bite the bullet it was the best thing I've done for both me and my family. I was crippled with anxiety it stopped me living I was just existing. If you've got any questions feel free to ask.
Good luck for tonight

I was given citropram for anxiety. I had only mild side effects for a few days.
With the first one I did feel a bit sick for a few hours but didnt experience that again.

I also felt a bit 'out of it' it wasn't in an awful way. It was quiet relaxing tbh.
That went on for about 5 days but for each day it was less and less.
5 weeks later I feel so much better. It really is worth giving it a try. Most people have very few side effects.

Hi there, I also took sertaline. No side effects and started to feel better in about 2 weeks. Totally cured me an now I don't take anything and am happier/stronger than I was pre taking them. Good luck x

Thanks guys I've taken it so that it done, stupidly took it when DH got home when I think it would be better if I took them in the morning. Has anyone had any experience changing the times so early on? or should I wait and speak the the pharmacist in the morning. Feel really silly now. But would rather change times now rather than once I've been taking them a while. x

Don't know about changing times but shouldn't think it'll be a problem so early on? Try taking the next one at lunchtime tomorrow then the third one in the morning the day after, maybe, so that it's gradual? I am guessing though!

I've been prescribed citalopram and I'm going to take the first one tomorrow morning - have been putting it off for a few days, resisting it, but it's gotta be done! I would quite like to feel gently out of it so fingers crossed that's all I get for side effects!

Maltakano · 25/11/2013 19:41

What dose are you on just now? I started at 50mg and went up 50 every 4 days or so. Now on 200. It's a year later and I can honestly say that it has saved my life, albeit along with brilliant care from mental health team.

I think that, if you can, treat the meds as one part of the solution. Be kind to yourself, it's a cliche but it's true. You are not bad for talking to the doctor in front of your kids. You are very brave for confronting your illness. Lower your expectations of yourself for a while at least. And then keep on just getting by until the fog lifts.

Flowerydems · 25/11/2013 19:43

I know I think it should be ok. Already feeling quite heavy if that makes sense. Hope it doesn't hit me hard tomorrow cause we have toddlers in the morning then got to humph them across town to take DS1 to nursery in the afternoon.

Hope tomorrow morning goes well for you. I was planning putting my first one off but don't think DH would be able to put up with me for another couple of days the way I've been

Aw Maltakano thanks, really needed to hear that. it's just 50mg just now and I'm back to the doctors in a fortnight to see how I'm getting on with that dose I'm assuming.

Yes changing time gradually. I did exactly the same as u. Then took its afternoon, dinner time then the fourth day morning x

Badgerdad · 25/11/2013 19:51

I took it for years & It was a great help with few side effects! I took it in the morning. Good luck to you!

OrlandoWoolf · 25/11/2013 21:58

I take mine in the morning. Been on them for a month now. The main side effect was sweating at night.

I'm not sure if the effects have kicked in yet.

Funnyfishface · 27/11/2013 00:12

Hi there. I take 50 mg around 6pm. I have been on sertraline for 2 months and they are literally saving my life.
I had expected awful side effects but I didn't really get any. A slight light headed feeling maybe.
Well done for going to the docs. Don't beat yourself up. Be proud that you managed to ask for help.
Good luck. I'm sure you will feel better in a few days.

Juneywoony · 27/11/2013 06:13

I've had sertraline on and off over the years, the only time I've had any problems with it is when I've been on a higher dosage but that is because I have Bipolar which went undiagnosed for a long time. I still take it now 50mg In the morning along with my other meds and have no problem with it.

I can't remember getting any terrible side effects when starting it but then again my memory is rubbish lol!

I hope it does the trick for you and you are soon feeling more like yourself, x
