Thinking about getting counselling

I probably needed it about 10 years ago and I might have been in a better place than I am now if I had, but I'm only just accepting the fact that perhaps talking to someone in a professional capacity will help me move forward.

Does anyone know if I have to talk things through with a GP first or will they just refer me straight away if I ask?

Thank you.

Your gp will perhaps ask some questions as to check you qualify for NHS counselling. Be aware though that it will be very short term, usually 6 or so sessions unless you have a serious mental health diagnosis. If you are wanting longer term talking treatment then looking at charities who may offer free or reduced payment, private options etc as well. All depends what you are hoping for.

Lists for waiting vary. Group therapy options or online cbt are also offered sometimes after the assessment.
